VideoStudio Pro X8

Hi, welcome! Let's see quickly how to use Corel VideoStudio Pro X! Leave us comments in case you find mistakes. VideoStudio is a software used to create and edit videos, playing with videos, images and text. You have three main workspaces Capture is used to record and get source files to use in your future video project; Edit is used to edit your video; and Share to export it when all is finished. Let's start making a video. To start working, you need to open the Edit workspace. This is composed by a Preview on the left, a list of Tools and a navigator on the right, and, at the bottom, the project timeline that we will see. We are going to use the Timeline View only, since this is the most complete one. First of all, you need to import all the files you will use in your project.

Simply click and drag your files inside the timeline. You can import videos and images inside Video or Overlay Tracks, indicated by this icon, and you can import sound files inside the Voice or the Music Track, the last two rows in your timeline. All files imported in the timeline are also called clips. These are shown with their respective thumbnails and filenames. Videos with sound included show a loudspeaker icon on them. Then you need to adjust the settings of your Project. Just go to Settings on top and then to Project Properties... In this new window, choose the format on top, and the resolution below. Use Edit... below to adjust advanced settings. In case you are creating a video for YouTube, select Online as format and choose one of the HD settings shown. When you are done, go to OK. You can see your Project name and resolution in the top right corner. Some clips imported may not match the correct resolution you fixed for your Project. In this case you need to stretch them. Select the clip you need to adapt by clicking on it. Selected clips are always highlighted in orange. Then check the Preview.

If the clip is inside an Overlay Track, you can move the clip by dragging it. You can drag the yellow nodes to scale the clip, and the green ones to skew. In case you mistake, use CTRL+Z to undo. The Preview also includes the Player to check your project. You can play and stop fast using Space key. The Preview has two different modes in Clip mode, you will play just the clip selected, and eventually edit it. In Project mode, you will check all your Project in full, so all its clips on the timeline. To check all, you can use the player, or simply fix the playhead, clicking above the timeline, or drag the playhead directly. The Preview always shows all that is right under the playhead. Let's see how to edit clips. You can move a selected clip simply clicking and dragging it through its track or in another track. If you have clips overlapping in time in two different tracks, its is shown first the clip that is on the lower track. There is a difference between the Video Track and the Overlay Track. All clips inside the Video Track can't be moved, since they are the main video of your project. All clips inside the Overlay track can be moved instead, and will always appear on the clips inside the Video Track. To stretch or shorten a clip, click and drag from its edges. Your pointer will show a double black arrow.

Keep in mind that you can't stretch videos and sound clips over their original duration. In case you want to loop them, simply copy and paste. Right-click on the selected clip, and go to Copy. Then simply click and place the copy where you like. You can also delete clips by right-clicking and going to Delete, or using Delete key. If you don't want to loop the clip, you can trim it. A trimmed clip is a clip with a different time duration because its playback speed has been changed. If you hold Shift down and drag from the edges of a clip, you will trim it. In this case your pointer is a double white arrow. A small note gives you the clip's duration and the playback speed percentage applied. So if you stretch the clip, the clip will be played faster, if you enlong it, you will play it slower, and so the clip will last longer. You can also stretch sound clips, and these will keep their original pitch. Whereas, if you want to split a selected clip in two, fix the playhead and use the S letter key from your keyboard. You can also hide a full track and its content. Simply click on the track icons to enable or disable tracks. Use your mouse wheel to move fast on the left or right in time. If you also hold CTRL down, you will zoom in and out around the playhead.

This is the basic editing. VideoStudio has lots of features very useful for your video project, all listed above the timeline. Let's see some. The Media panel collects all files and samples collected inside VideoStudio. You can collect your own ones dragging them inside the panel. Instant Projects lets you create fast videos using sample templates. Check it! The Transition panel is used to create special transitions. Each element is a different transition, and you can see a nice preview of each of them. If you overlap two clips on the same track, you do create a transition, which is an effect that passes from one clip and goes to the other. You can simply add the one you like dragging it from the Transition panel. The more the clips are overlapped, the more the transition will last, and be slower also. If you put the clips distant enough, the transition disappears. You can further personalize the transition right-clicking on it and going to Open Options Panel, or clicking on Options in the panel corner.

You can add transitions also on the extreme edges of a clip, to make it appear or disappear with effects. In the Filter Panel, you have a collection of effects or ''filters'' instead. Simply click and drag one on your videos or images. Clips with filters active do show a FX icon on themselves. Plus, if you click on Options, in Attribute section, you can adjust all settings for your effects. If you uncheck Replace Last Filter, you can add more than one filter on the selected clip. You can also enable/disable a selected filter clicking on the eye icon, and remove it clicking on the cross on the right. If you go to Customize Filter, you adjust the settings for the selected filter. Lots of these default filters do change in time. To edit them, you need to use the keyframes. We won't see these in this beginner tutorial. Use Mask and Chroma Key to show parts of the clip interested. Plus, if you choose Edit on top, you can correct and enhance the visible clip you have selected. Use Color Correction to adjust the colors of your clip. Use the Rotate buttons to rotate the clip. Enable Pan and Zoom to move or zoom in/out the clip on the Preview. With a video clip selected, use Speed/Time-lapse and Variable Speed to edit the playback speed, or Reverse Video to play it on the opposite way. Use Split Audio to decompose audio from its video clip. This creates a new sound clip more below, and the original video won't have sound anymore, as the red icon suggests. In sound clips, under Music & Voice section, you can change the playback speed and add audio effects going on Audio Filter. You can close the Options panel clicking on the arrow in the top right corner. The Title panel lets you add some text.

Choose a template and drag it on the timeline. Text clips are always in green and show a T icon in a corner. You can add them in any Video, Overlay or Title Tracks. You can then double click on the Preview to edit it, with the Title panel open. To start from scratch, double-click on the Preview with the Title panel open. Type inside, and click outside to apply. You can move the title dragging it, scale it using the yellow nodes, and rotate it using the violet ones. Plus, you can personalize it using the Options panel, setting size, font, distribution and color. Make sure to have the text selected to apply all. You can add any border, shadow or transparency more below. Even more, you can add filters on the text, going on Filter as seen before. Once your project is finished, save it.

Go to File and then to Save As... VideoStudio Projects are saved as .vsp files, and these do contain everything you have on the timeline and any filter you applied on clips. You can open your projects going on File and then on Open Project... If you want to export your video instead, go to Share on top. On the left you can check your final video and fix the orange markers to decide which parts of the video to render. On the right you have all the settings to render it choose Computer to obtain your final video file on your hard-disk; choose Device to export for your cellphone or a camera; choose Web to export for social networks. Then choose format, resolution, name and destination folder. Go to Start to get your final vide
